The Game
Following a back-and-forth first quarter that saw Cleveland State with a one-point advantage at 19-18, the Vikings used a 10-0 run to start the second frame to extend their lead to 29-18 just over three minutes into the quarter. A
Colbi Maples layup opened this scoring run for Cleveland State, while a pair of
Macey Fegan free throws at the 6:58 mark gave the Vikings a double-digit lead.
Although NKU was able to stop the CSU scoring run on its next possession, a
Paula Pique three-pointer in response put the Vikings up 32-21 midway through the frame. The Vikings then closed out the quarter with an 8-3 run, taking a 40-25 advantage into the halftime break.
Northern Kentucky was then able to work its way back into the contest throughout the third quarter, as a 26-10 edge for the Norse during the frame put the score at 51-50, NKU heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
After NKU extended its lead over the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, a
Jada Leonard layup and an
Izabella Zingaro three-pointer knotted the score at 55-55 with 7:20 left on the clock. Three straight baskets from Zingaro then regained the lead for the Vikings at 61-55 midway through the quarter.
Cleveland State's defense held the Norse to just four points over the final three minutes of the contest, while Maples and Leonard combined to go 6-for-6 from the free throw line to pull away with the 69-61 victory on the road.
