EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Cleveland State (1-1) picked up its first win of the year after blanking Southern Indiana on the road, 2-0.
The Vikings started the scoring in the 15th minute when
Elise Boyd dribbled from midfield past the entire USI defense off a restart to make it 1-0. The tally was the first of her career.
Sophia Cucchetti doubled the advantage in the 29th minute with a perfect chip from the top of the box off a pass from
Ryleigh Alcala.
Cleveland State went on to maintain the 2-0 lead at the intermission.
The second half featured strong defensive battles, with the Green and White securing a 2-0 shutout on the road.
The Vikings had seven shots in the contest, led by
Mayra Sesmas with two. Boyd, Cucchetti, and
Elsa Baldasano-Martinez all had one shot on goal.
Hayleigh Lewis recorded her first collegiate win and shutout after making nine saves.
Cleveland State returns to the field on Thursday, August 28, with a trip to Bowling Green for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
