ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Cleveland State (2-4) dropped a 19-5 contest to No. 20 Michigan on Tuesday evening.
The Vikings got off to a quick start as
Amiri Austin converted on the game's first shot for a 1-0 lead at the 13:54 mark.
Xander Johnson then doubled the lead off a feed from Austin with 8:50 remaining in the quarter. Michigan closed the opening frame with three straight goals to lead 3-2.
The first four goals of the second quarter belonged to the Wolverines as the margin grew to 7-2 with 7:04 to go in the half. Austin briefly halted the run with his second of the game with 4:34 left. U-M added two more goals as the halftime score read 9-3.
Michigan rattled off six unanswered goals to start the second half, growing their advantage to 15-3 with 7:47 remaining. Johnson bagged his second of the contest with 1:56 showing as the game shifted to the fourth quarter.
Following a Wolverines goal,
Mattix Groves scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from
Evan Knickle to trail 16-5 with 7:38 left in the quarter. Michigan then scored the final three goals to win the game, 19-5.
Drew Graves led the Green and White with four ground balls.
Robbie Stewart went 9-of-24 in the faceoff circle.
Justin Dalum made nine saves in the cage.
The Green and White conclude non-conference play on Saturday, March 8 at St. Bonaventure with a start time of 3 p.m.
