COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cleveland State (0-1) opened the 2025 campaign with a 14-4 loss at Ohio State (2-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Buckeyes held a 2-0 advantage at the end of the opening quarter with tallies at the 7:42 and 5:06 marks.
Ohio State tacked on two more goals before
Brennen Hickey converted on the man-up off a pass from
Alex Van Voorhis to trail 4-1. The tally was the first for the freshman from West Chester Township, Ohio. However, OSU added three more goals to take a 7-1 advantage into the half.
Hickey opened the second half with an unassisted goal with 12:09 showing, but the home team responded with six unanswered goals to lead 13-2 at the end of the third quarter.
Griffin Valli forced a turnover and went the distance of the field for his first collegiate goal with 10:54 remaining in the final quarter. Five minutes later, Ohio State struck for its final goal to lead 14-3.
A man-up conversion by
Jacob Lubrant with 3:13 left was the final strike as the Green and White fell in the opener, 14-4.
Hickey led the Vikings in his debut with two goals on five shots. Cleveland State scooped up 30 ground balls with
Robbie Stewart and Valli having four apiece.
Each team forced 15 turnovers in the game with
Drew Graves leading everyone with three. Stewart won seven faceoffs.
Justin Dalum made 13 saves in the cage.
The Vikings will head to the reigning back-to-back National Champions, No. 1 Notre Dame on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.
