SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Cleveland State (0-2) fell to the reigning back-to-back National Champions, No. 1 Notre Dame (1-0), 24-6 on Wednesday evening.
The Fighting Irish opened the game with three consecutive goals before
Xander Johnson got the Vikings on the board with 8:29 remaining in the quarter. Two minutes later,
Amiri Austin converted on the man-up off a pass from
Alex Van Voorhis to trail by one. However, Notre Dame closed the quarter with four straight goals to lead 7-2.
The second quarter saw the top team in the country run off eight consecutive goals, stretching the margin to 15-2 with 1:10 left in the half.
Brennen Hickey notched his third goal of the year with 32 seconds showing as the Green and White trailed 15-3 at the intermission.
Notre Dame scored the first three goals of the new half before
Adam Van Voorhis netted his first collegiate goal to trail 18-4 with 4:58 to go in the quarter. Two minutes later,
Will Adair found the back of the net, but the Fighting Irish got the goal back just eight seconds later. The final tally of the quarter belonged to
Jacob Lubrant as Cleveland State trailed 16-9.
The final frame saw ND account for all five goals as the Vikings dropped their second straight road game to open the season, 24-6.
Robbie Stewart finished the game with 13 faceoff wins and seven of the teams 25 ground balls.
Griffin Valli had two of the three caused turnovers.
Justin Dalum made nine saves in goal.
