Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State men's basketball team fell at home Wednesday night to Valparaiso 90-75 at the Wolstein Center. The game was the second in a home-and-home series that began last year. The Vikings got the better of the host Beacons in the first matchup last season, and this year Valpo got its revenge. The visitors led wire-to-wire in improving to 4-1 on the season, Cleveland State is now 2-4.
Tre Beard led a trio of Vikings in double figures with 22 points. Beard finished 7-of-12 from the field with six of his seven makes coming from three-point range. Beard was the only Cleveland State player to make an outside shot in the game accounting for all six of Cleveland State's three-pointers. Beard has scored in double figures in all but one game so far and has scored 20 or more in two of the last three games.
Chevalier Emery had 14 points and
Dayan Nessah finished with 13. Emery finished 4-for-7 from the field and chipped in two rebounds. Nessah finished 5-for-12 and continued his streak of scoring in double figures in all six games so far. Both shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
The visitors took control from the opening jump, opening up a double-digit lead just under six minutes into the game. Valpo led by 12, 39-27 at the break. In the second half, the Valpo lead climbed as high as 20 points as the Vikings were unable to pull back within striking distance.
Cleveland State shot just 24 percent (6-25) from beyond the three-point arc. Valparaiso finished the game at 54 percent from the field including 62 percent in the second half.
The Vikings return to action on Saturday at Kent State with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. Cleveland State then returns home to host Waynesburg on Tuesday at Woodling Gymnasium.
