FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Cleveland State volleyball team picked up its first win in Horizon League play Friday, earning a five-set victory at Purdue Fort Wayne.
Laken Voss and
Bryn VanVleet both recorded double-doubles on the night, Voss with 21 kills and 16 digs and VanVleet with 18 kills and 11 digs.
In addition to Voss and VanVleet,
Matilda Dahlstrom also recorded double-digit kills, finishing with 12 on the match.
Vayda Delventhal led the Viking defense with 16 digs, while
Reilly Wadden added 12.
As a team, the Vikings combined for 15.0 total blocks, including 11 from
JeriLynn Koehler.
During the opening frame, the two teams played a back-and-forth set until the end of the frame when Cleveland State gained set-point at 24-23 on a Purdue Fort Wayne error. Although the Mastodons were able to even the set on the ensuing point, the Vikings rattled off back-to-back points to close out the 26-24 first set victory on a
JeriLynn Koehler solo block.
After dropping the next two sets, the Vikings were able to rebound during the fourth frame to pick up a 25-13 victory. After gaining a sizeable advantage midway through the set at 16-9 following a
Bryn VanVleet kill, the Vikings were able to hold their advantage for the rest of the frame. Cleveland State closed the set with four straight points, including a
Julia Jozefov kill to earn the 25-13 victory.
The Vikings carried this momentum into the fifth set then, as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a Koehler and
Matilda Dahlstrom block to force a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Cleveland State extended its lead to 8-3, before back-to-back points on a Dahlstrom kill and VanVleet block put the Vikings up 10-4 late in the frame.
Cleveland State then closed out the set with four of the last five points, closing out the 15-7 fifth set victory on a
Laken Voss kill.
The Vikings will close out their two-match roadswing at Purdue Fort Wayne tomorrow, with first serve set for 3:00 p.m.
