Boardman, OH-Kaitlin Kormuth led the charge on what was a strong opening day for the Cleveland State women's golf team in the first round of the Roseann Schwartz Invitational. Kormuth fired a 3-under 69 to take the lead at the halfway point of the tournament. The Vikings posted a 16-over par 304 to place sixth in the team race. Host YSU leads the way with a 4-over par team total.
Kormuth played steady golf throughout the day finishing with five birdies against two bogeys. She started fast with a birdie on the third hole. Kormuth made bogey on the fifth hole before rebounding right away with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. She closed the front tine with two pars to make the turn in 2-under 34. A birdie on 11 and a bogey on 14 kept her at 2-under headed down the stretch. She closed the round with a birdie at the 18
th hole to finish at 3punder 69. The round ties the second-best score in program history, one shy of the record of 68. Kormuth had an eagle putt on 18 to tie the program record but it just missed, as she settled for the tap-in birdie to post 3-under. Kormuth is one of seven players in the field to finish the opening round under par and carries a one-shot lead into tomorrow's final round.
Brynna Mardis also had a strong opening round for CSU, posting a 2-over 74 good for a tie for 12
th place. Mardis made 13 pars, including seven in a row to start her round. She closed with two birdies to finish at 2-over.
Mandie Ruminski is tied for 31
st place with a 6-over 78 in the opening round. Ruminski shot back-to-back scores of 39 on both sides.
Kaylin Kline is tied for 57
th place after posting 11-over par in round one.
Chloe Holton, playing in her first tournament in the Viking lineup, is tied for 62
nd place at 12-over par.
Abby Blackburn, playing as an individual, posted her lowest score to date this season finishing at 7-over 79 in a tie for 35
th place.
Round two is scheduled to begin tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Scoreboard Live throughout the day.
