AKRON, Ohio – Cleveland State (2-0-2) battled Akron (0-1-3) to a 3-3 draw on Monday evening. The Green and White overcame two deficits in the game to earn the point.
The Vikings claimed a 1-0 lead in the second minute on an own goal as Quinn Groves cross deflected off a Zip and into the back of the net. Five minutes later, Akron tied the match on an Emil Jaaskelainen header off a cross from Stefan Dobrijevic.
The Zips went ahead 2-1 in the 13th minute after Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal capitalized on a missed clearance in the middle of the box.
The next 32 minutes went scoreless, with Akron taking the 2-1 advantage into the break. The home team doubled up the Vikings in shots, 8-4.
Cleveland State pulled even in the 49th minute as Oskar von Esebek tallied his first collegiate goal. Akron went back on top in the 75th minute as Jaaskelainen headed in his second of the game off a ball over the top from Maximus Barboto.
One minute later, Marko Rimac intercepted a pass and found Bojan Kolevski, whose shot was blocked but rolled to Matteo Correia, who finished it off to tie the game. Neither team would find the back of the net again as the contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
Akron held a 21-11 edge in shots, but Cleveland State had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Caleb Trowbridge, M. Rimac, and Kolevski all finished with two shots. Stephen Yerian came up with six big saves in the contest.
The Vikings return home on Thursday, September 5, for a 7 p.m. contest against Mercyhurst.
