Cleveland State Volleyball Defeats Norfolk State To Post 3-0 Hokie Invitational Record

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Cleveland State volleyball team posted a perfect 3-0 record at the Hokie Invitational this weekend, closing out action with a 3-1 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday. With the win, the Vikings are now 7-2 on the season.

A trio of Vikings finished with double-digit kill efforts against Norfolk State, led by Liberty Torres with 19. Laken Voss added 12 kills and Nia Hall chipped in 11.

Defensively, Emma Walker had a team-best 17 digs, while Ayva Leon recorded 14 digs on the day.

As a team, the Vikings recorded 11.0 total blocks, including five from JeriLynn Koehler and three from Torres, Ella Mihacevich and Allana Appleby.

During the opening set, the Vikings were able to distance themselves at the midway point, when back-to-back Liberty Torres kills put Cleveland State up 16-11. The Vikings controlled play throughout the rest of the frame, ending the set with a 6-0 run, earning the 25-15 victory on a Laken Voss kill.

The second set was much of the same, as Cleveland State gained an 18-13 lead midway through the frame on a trio of Torres kills and an Ella Mihacevich kill. The Vikings then carried their momentum through the end of the set, earning set point on a Norfolk State error, before closing out the 25-20 victory with a JeriLynn Koehler and Torres block.

After dropping the third set the Vikings bounced back in the fourth frame, jumping out to a 16-12 lead following a pair of Norfolk State errors and a Mihacevich service ace. Cleveland State was able to hold a multi-point lead for the rest of the frame then, including a 22-17 edge following back-to-back kills from Voss and Torres.

The Vikings were finally able to earn match-point on another Torres kill, putting the score at 24-19, before a Nia Hall kill eventually closed out the 25-21 fourth set victory.

Cleveland State will close out non-league play next week, traveling to Kent State on Thursday, September 19 before hosting Akron on Friday, September 20.
