LORETTO, Pa. – The Vikings (0-4-1) drew with Saint Francis (2-1-2) 1-1 on Sunday afternoon. The draw gave the Green and White their first point under head coach
Mark Sappington.
Saint Francis converted a corner kick just a minute into the game as Lauren Pyle headed it home off a ball from Tomke Dziesiaty.
The Vikings drew even in the 39th minute after
Bella Delfino finished off a pair of passes from
Mayra Sesmas and
Livia Penton. The tally for the senior was the first of her career as the game went into the half tied at one-apiece.
The Green and White held a 4-1 edge in shots, with all four of those going on frame. CSU also held a 5-1 advantage in corners.
Cleveland State had a pair of scoring chances in the 66th minute on a corner kick by Sesmas. The first near goal came off the head of
Madi Snyder, but the goalkeeper came up with a great diving save. During the clearance, the ball fell to Delfino, whose shot from the top of the box went off the crossbar.
The Vikings had one more scoring chance in the 76th minute but
Payton Koebbe's shot was saved as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Cleveland State finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots and 6-4 edge in corners.
Delfino came off the bench to lead the way in shots with four including two on target.
Madison Ott came up with three saves in goal.
The Vikings play its final home non-conference game on Sunday, September 8 against Bowling Green at 1 p.m. The Green and White then hit the road for three straight games.
