Cleveland State Women's Soccer Falls to Niagara 3-1

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Cleveland State (0-3-0) was downed by Niagara (3-1-0) by a score of 3-1 on Thursday evening.

The first half was scoreless with Niagara holding a 5-3 edge in shots.

The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the 49th minute as Maia MacLean finished off a cross from Isabella Mazzaferro. Two minutes later, Mazzaferro dribbled down the sideline and fired the ball into the top post to lead 2-0.

Cleveland State got on the board in the 69th minute when Sophia Cucchetti kept battling in the box to score her first collegiate goal to trail 2-1. However, a minute later, a handball in the box led to a penalty kick for the hosts as the margin moved to 3-1.

Niagara held a 17-10 edge in shots on the evening. Tanji Sarver led the way with four shots including two on frame. Madison Ott made five saves in goal.

The Vikings remain on the road Sunday to face Saint Francis on Sunday, September 1 at 4 p.m.
