Cleveland State Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Victory Over Youngstown State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team opened its final weekend inside Woodling Gymnasium with a win Friday, picking up a 3-1 victory over Youngstown State. With the win the Vikings are now 18-8 overall this season and 9-6 in Horizon League play.

Four Vikings finished the match with double-digit kills, led by Liberty Torres with 24. Laken Voss added 12 kills on the match, while JeriLynn Koehler tallied 11 and Nia Hall posted 10.

Defensively, the Vikings were led by Emma Walker with 31 digs, while Ella Mihacevich added 13, Voss and Vayda Delventhal both added 12 and Hall recorded 10.

Hall, Mihacevich and Voss all recorded double-doubles on the match.

Cleveland State combined for seven service aces against YSU, including three from Hall and Mihacevich.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings rebounded with a 27-25 victory in set two to even the contest at 1-1.

Cleveland State carried its momentum into the third set then, gaining a late 19-15 lead on a Torres kill. Two plays later, the Vikings rattled off four straight points to extend their lead to 23-16, while a Koehler kill gave the Vikings set point at 24-19. Although YSU was able to fend off one set point, the Vikings eventually closed out the 25-20 set victory with a Voss kill.

During the fourth set the Vikings were able to gain a 13-5 lead midway through the frame on back-to-back points from Hall including a kill and service ace. The Vikings then held a sizeable advantage for the remainder of the set, closing out the 25-14 victory with back-to-back points on a Koehler kill and YSU error.

Cleveland State will close out its 2024 home slate tomorrow, hosting Youngstown State at 2:00 p.m. Prior to first serve the Vikings will honor the senior quartet of Liberty Torres, Madison Olinger, Emma Walker, and Ella Mihacevich.
