FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team advanced to the 2024 Horizon League Championship match, picking up a 3-1 victory over Milwaukee in Saturday's semifinal contest. With the win, the third-seeded Vikings will now take on No. 4 Green Bay in Sunday's championship match, with first serve set for 2:00 p.m.
Saturday's semifinal appearance marked the 17
th time that the Vikings advanced to the semifinals, while Sunday will mark the 10
th championship appearance for Cleveland State.
Emma Walker led the Viking defense against the Panthers, recording a career-high 47 digs on Saturday, while
Laken Voss added 17 and
Vayda Delventhal chipped in 12.
Offensively, the Vikings were paced by
Nia Hall with 23 kills, while
JeriLynn Koehler added 12.
The 23 kills for Hall tied her career-high, and marked her second 20-kill effort over the last four matches.
As a team, the Vikings combined for 10.0 team blocks on the night, including five each from Koehler and
Allana Appleby.
After dropping the first set, the Vikings rebounded with a 25-23 victory during the second set, putting the match score at 1-1 after two frames.
Cleveland State carried its momentum into the third set, as three straight points on a pair of Hall kills and a Walker service ace gave the Vikings a 15-12 advantage midway through the set. The Vikings were then able to fend off a late Milwaukee run, closing out the 25-23 third set win on a Hall kill.
During the fourth set, the Vikings had to play from behind during the entire frame, pulling within two points on yet another Hall kill, before fending off the first Milwaukee set point to tie the set at 24-24 on a Milwaukee error.
After trading points over the next two plays, the Vikings earned their second set point of the frame at 26-25 on a Voss kill, before closing out the 27-25 victory on a Hall kill.
