Sappington Earns First Victory as Cleveland State Women's Soccer Blanks YSU 1-0

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Cleveland State (1-13-1, 1-5-0) earned its first win of the season after shutting out Youngstown State (3-5-5, 2-2-2) 1-0 on Thursday evening. The victory marked the first for the Vikings under head coach Mark Sappington.

The opening half went scoreless despite the Green and White putting three shots on target.

Youngstown State nearly broke through in the 51st minute as a Lianna Van Slice shot went off the post. A minute later, YSU was called for a handball in the box on an attempted cross, giving Cleveland State a penalty kick.

Mayra Sesmas stepped up to the spot and converted, raising her team-best goal total to five.

The Penguins nearly equalized in the 82nd and 89th minutes as both shots went off the woodwork and put out of danger as the Green and White held on for the 1-0 win.

Youngstown State held a 17-8 advantage in shots, but the Vikings had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Cleveland State also took four corners compared to one for the home side.

Erica Leinweber and Sesmas each finished with three shots. Makayla Parry and Emma Pompo had the others. Sesmas had three of the six shots on frame.
