CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the weekend with a five-set victory Saturday, picking up a 3-2 win over Green Bay to close out the two-match series against the Phoenix. With the win, the Vikings are now 13-5 overall this season and 4-3 in Horizon League play
Ella Mihacevich led the Vikings with her second triple-double of the season, finishing with 51 assists, 21 digs and 10 kills.
In addition,
Emma Walker notched a double-double for the first time this season, finishing with a season-best 32 digs and 11 assists against the Phoenix.
Liberty Torres paced the Viking offense with 23 kills, while
Nia Hall added 18 for the Vikings.
Defensively,
Reilly Wadden finished with 16 digs, while
Vayda Delventhal was the fourth Viking to record double-digit digs after posting 13 on the match.
As a team, the Vikings recorded 10.0 total blocks, including seven from
JeriLynn Koehler.
Cleveland State also combined for nine service aces on the day, with three from Walker and two from Delventhal.
The two teams split the first four sets of the match, with Cleveland State winning the first and third, and Green Bay picking up wins in the second and fourth. Not only did the two teams split the first four sets, but three of the first four frames finished with extra points, including a 27-25 victory for the Vikings in the opening set.
After forcing a fifth and deciding set, the Vikings were able to open the final frame with the momentum, going 3-0 to start the set to force an early Green Bay timeout. Cleveland State then extended its lead to 6-1 on a Torres kill, before another Torres kill and a Mihacevich service put the Vikings up 8-2 midway through the frame.
Cleveland State was then able to hold off a late Phoenix run, earning set-point on yet another Torres kill, before finally closing out the frame on a Green Bay error.
This marks Cleveland State's third five-set match of the season, with the Vikings owning a perfect 3-0 record when going to five sets.
The Vikings will be back in Woodling Gymnasium next weekend, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne in a two-match series on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19.
