Strong Offense Leads Vikings To Four-Set Victory Over Buffalo

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Behind four players with double-digit kills the Cleveland State volleyball team opened the CSU Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Buffalo Friday evening. With the win the Vikings are now 6-3 on the year, while the Bulls fall to 3-4.

Set scores against the Bulls were 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-14.

The Viking offense was led by the quartet of Kara KochJackie DabbeltMarie Frease and Kerry Winchester who combined for 51 of Cleveland State's 57 kills. Koch posted 20 kills against the Bulls for her fourth 20-kill match of the season, while Dabbelt added 10 and Frease and Winchester each tallied 10. 

 
 
 

CSU was also strong defensively against the Bulls, as four players recorded double-digit digs led by Amanda Medvetz who posted 18. Annie Djukic tallied a career-high 16, while Brittany Holland and Koch each notched 11. Djukic also tallied 45 assists on the night, marking the second double-double of her career.

After dropping the first set the Vikings rallied back to win the next three to claim the four-set victory. After a tight first half of the second set, CSU was able to gain a three-point lead at the 18-15 mark on back-to-back kills from Koch and Frease. The Vikings were able to hold at least a two-point advantage for the rest of the set, closing out the frame with a pair of Dabbelt kills and a Buffalo error.

The third set was much of the same, as the Vikings came back from a three-point deficit (14-11) to gain their first lead of the frame at the 18-17 mark with a Koch kill. CSU held the advantage for the rest of the frame, earning the three-point victory on a Frease kill.

The Vikings came out strong during the final frame, jumping out to a 7-2 lead and holding the advantage for the rest of the set, claiming the 25-14 win.

The Vikings will continue the CSU Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 8) with a match against Eastern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. and a match against Oakland at 7:00 p.m. Links for live stats and video for both matches can be found on the volleyball schedule page at CSUVikings.com.
