Weekly Game Notes
LEAGUE PLAY WINDING DOWN
Cleveland State continues the 2012 regular season as they get ready for two games this coming week, including the team's final home regular season game of the year. CSU will first take on Loyola on the road at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, before then playing UIC at home Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
The Vikings ended last week 1-0-0, here is a recap of that contest.
Game #14: Cleveland State 2, Milwaukee 1 (OT) (Oct. 20)
The Vikings improved to 3-1-1 on the year in overtime contests Saturday as they took down Milwaukee 2-1 at home. After no goals for 88 plus minutes, CSU grabbed the lead late on a Cristian Arboleda goal through a crowd in tbe box off a pass from Cazz Warren. Despite the little time Milwaukee was able to bounce back with a goal to tie it with just 13 seconds to go. The action was not over for the home team though as forward Admir Suljevic was able to send the Vikings home happy knocking in a free kick just over two minutes into overtime for the win.
STANDINGS BUNCHED TOGETHER
With three games to go for CSU in league play the Vikings are currently sitting in the third spot in the standings at 2-1-1. Despite holding that third spot with two wins, seven of the eight Horizon League teams (first place through seventh) currently sit between one and three league victories.
BALANCED OFFENSIVE ATTACK
This season through 13 games CSU has been very balanced on the offensive end, with nine players scoring at least one goal. Seven of those players (Cazz Warren, Zach Ellis-Hayden, Admir Suljevic, Mike Derezic,Alfonso Sandoval, Cristian Arboleda, and Aaron Adkins) have multiple goals. Forward Admir Suljevic currently leads the way for CSU with four goals on the year.
SULJEVIC CLUTCH LATE
Junior forward Admir Suljevic is not only a leader on the field for the Vikings, he is also making clutch plays to bring home wins. In the Vikings' last two wins Suljevic has both assisted and scored on game-winning goals in overtime.
STUVER HONORED
Senior goalie Brad Stuver was honored the week of October 8th as the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week. Stuver earned that recognition for the first time in 2012, and was the first CSU player to be honored on the year.
SULJEVIC AND WARREN ADDING UP THE POINTS
Two Vikings' forwards, Admir Suljevic and Cazz Warren, are currently ranked in the top seven in the Horizon League points race. Suljevic is currently sixth with 10 points on the year. Warren is sitting right behind him in the rankings, coming in seventh with eight points.
SHUTDOWN STUVER
Senior goalie Brad Stuver is back in goal for his fourth straight year starting for the Vikings. Stuver is a two time all-league honoree (1st team in 2010, 2nd team in 2011), and 2010 Goalie of the Year award winner. He currently leads the league in shutouts with six, and is second in the league in both saves (62) and goals against average (0.88)
HIGH RANKING OFFENSE
Looking at the team rankings in the Horizon League, CSU is near the top in each major offensive category. Cleveland State is currently tied for third in goals with 20, in third place alone in assists with 16, and ranked fourth in points with 56.
FRESHMAN MAKING WINNING PLAYS
Although the Cleveland State Vikings brought back a lot of experience in 2011-12, this year's freshman class has made plays all year long. Through 14 games so far two freshmen (Alfonso Sandoval and Christian Arboleda) have scored game-winning goals. Sandoval has scored two game-winners this season, putting in the winner against both Michigan and Wright State. Arboleda scored his goal against Robert Morris in the season opener.
UP NEXT
The Vikings will have one final 2012 regular season game next week as they take on Green Bay on the road Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
