EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Cleveland State volleyball team had its four-match win streak ended with a 3-0 setback to host Michigan State at the Spartan Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
Match scores were 25-12, 25-19, 26-24.
"We didn't get off to a great start, but I thought we did a good job of battling back, especially in set three," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have a quick turnaround with another match in a few hours so we'll have to put this one behind us and get focused on the next match."
CSU was its own worst enemy in set one, committing 10 attack errors, while the Spartans hit .417.
The Vikings turned it around in the second set, which featured eight ties. Trailing 16-13, the Vikings used an MSU attack error and Megan Barhorst ace to pull within 16-15. However, the Spartans rattled off four straight points to expand their lead to 20-16.
CSU again hung around early in set three, trailing 15-14 after a Spartan attack error. However, three straight MSU points extended the lead to 18-14 and the lead was still four points (21-17) following a kill by Jennilee Rathje.
That's when the Vikings got hot, using a 6-2 run to pull even at 23-23. After the teams traded points, Rathje's kill and a CSU attack error ended the match.
Kara Koch led the Vikings with eight kills, while Jackie Dabbelt had six and Kerry Winchester five. Jordan Goad handed out 16 assists and Amy Grabiec made a team-most six digs.
The Vikings conclude play in the Spartan Challenge with a 4:30 p.m. match against St. John's on Saturday afternoon.
