VERONA, N.Y. - Cleveland State shot a final round 302 and placed 10th of 18 teams at the season opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-72, 7,100 yard Turning Stone Resort (Kaluhyat Course).
CSU opened with rounds of 317 and 315 during Monday's first two rounds and wound up seven shots behind ninth place Delaware.
"I thought we did a much better job of managing the course and our games today to post a pretty solid score for this course," head coach Steve Weir said. "We left a few shots out there and could have easily posted a sub-300 round today, but we'll get back, work on some things and improve for our next tournament.
"This is not an easy course because of the length and when you add in the wind, it makes it that much tougher."
Sophomore Michael Klaric tied for seventh place in the individual standings, just two shots shy of trying for second place.
Klaric shot rounds of 75-76-72 for a seven-over-par 223.
"Michael was solid all weekend, especially in today's final round," Weir said. "He hit a lot of good shots and played at a high level all weekend."
Freshman Andrew Bailey had a good start to his collegiate career as CSU's second finisher. He carded rounds of 79-79-76 (234) to tie for 36th place.
With Weir in New York with five players, he sent three to play at the JCU Invitational at the par-72, 6,646-yard Fowler's Mill G.C. on Saturday.
The 27 hole event was won by James Boxley who shot a 72-32 for a two-under-par 104.
Patrick Elber, who was playing his first event in a year due to a wrist injury, claimed runner-up honors with 74-37 (111). Brendan Byrne was CSU's other individual competing and he tied for fifth place at 113 (34-79).
The Vikings will be back in action on Sept. 13-14 when CSU competes at the Marshall Invitational.
