GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jackie Dabbelt recorded 17 kills in her first career collegiate match and Kara Koch added 14 as Cleveland State earned a 3-2 win over Liberty in the season opener for both teams at the East Carolina Classic on Friday night.
Match scores were 25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11.
"It's always nice to win your first match out," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have had some trouble with five set matches in the past so this was a big win for us. We never stopped battling and to win the final two sets was huge. There are still some things we need to work on, but we'll take this one."
Dabbelt, who redshirted last season, committed just three errors on 36 attempts, hitting .389 for the match.
"Jackie was huge tonight," Voss said. "She really got into a nice groove and earned some big points for us."
Lindsey Griffith added 11 kills and Amy Benz nine for the Vikings.
Jordan Goad contributed a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs, while Amy Grabiec made 26 digs and Amanda Medvetz 10.
The Vikings hit just .186 for the match, but saved their best for last, totaling a .321 attack percentage in the fifth set with 11 kills and just two errors in 28 attempts.
Karyl Bacon led Liberty, which hit .161, with 18 kills.
CSU continues play at the East Carolina Classic on Saturday (Aug. 28) when the Vikings play the host school at 1:00 p.m. and Charlotte at 5:00 p.m.
