DETROIT, Mich. - Detroit scored twice, once in each half, and the Titans kept the Viking attack at bay, as Detroit defeated Cleveland State, 2-0, on Friday afternoon (Oct. 15).
"It was a disappointing day," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "This was a game I thought we could have won, and we just made silly mistakes and didn't make the most of our opportunities."
Ya Ya Toure opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Toure stole the ball off an errant pass to CSU goalkeeper Brad Stuver and sent a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for an unassisted goal.
"Stuver just hesitated to make a decision, and the ball got picked," Kazemaini said. "It was a sloppy play on our part, and it put is in a hole for the rest of the game."
Sam Seppo added an insurance goal for the Titans at the 79:47 mark. Seppo took the ball off a throw-in by Adam Bedell and scored from the left side of the net.
After being held to only two shots in the first half, Cleveland State became more aggressive in the second. The Vikings out-shot Detroit 7-4 in the second period, with Jeff Baker and Brian Donnelly recording shots on goal.
"Offensively, we just aren't there," Kazemaini said. "We passed the ball well, but in the last 20 yards down to the goal we just didn't have any offensive flair."
Stuver ended the night with four saves.
The win evened Detroit's record to 6-6-1 and improved the Titans to 4-2 in conference play. The Vikings fell to 3-3 in the Horizon League and 6-8 overall.
"The next match is key," Kazemaini said. "We have to try and get a win. We need to get some confidence going before we play our next conference match (against Wright State on Oct. 23). That game will be crucial as far as us getting into the playoffs, and we need to get some offense going before then."
The Vikings travel to Indiana for their next match, playing IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 1:00 p.m. in a non-conference match.
