COLUMBUS, Ohio - Beth Greulich finished with 13 kills and Cleveland State won the first set, but Ohio State rallied to win the final three sets and earn a 3-1 win over the Vikings at the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic at St. John Arena on Saturday morning.
CSU fell to 11-4 with the loss, while the Buckeyes improved to 11-1.
Match scores were 24-26, 25-20, 25-11-25-15.
Liz Fazio added eight kills for the Vikings, allowing her to reach the 1,000 career kill mark. Fazio, who now has 1,006 career kills, is the second CSU player to reach the milestone this season, joining Greulich.
Amy Benz added seven kills, while Jordan Goad finished with 33 assists and five digs and Amy Grabiec produced a team-best seven digs.
The first set was tight throughout, but the Vikings were able to take a 13-10 lead on an OSU attack error and forced a Buckeye timeout. OSU responded with three straight points to tie the set at 13-13, but a 7-3 run by the Vikings gave them a 20-16 lead on a Benz kill.
However, the Buckeyes used a 6-1 run to take a 22-21 lead and the teams exchanged points until a Greulich kill and Fazio ace gave CSU the first set.
Greulich started the second set with a kill to give CSU the early lead and it remained close throughout the first part of the set. With OSU clinging to a slim 12-11 lead, the Buckeyes used a mini 5-1 run to assume a 17-12 advantage in evening up the match.
OSU jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the fourth set and never let up, extending the lead to 17-4, in taking a 2-1 lead.
CSU hung tough in the fourth set and found itself tied at 7-7 after a Greulich kill. However, six straight points from OSU gave them a 13-7 lead and they wouldn't look back in winning the match.
Kristin Dozier led OSU with 15 kills, while Amanda Peterson had 43 assists and Chelsea Noble 15 digs.
The Vikings will return to action on Friday (Sept. 25) when CSU travels to Butler for a 7:00 p.m. match.
