CHICAGO, Ill. - Cleveland State had its 12-match win streak snapped on Saturday evening with a 3-2 setback at UIC in Horizon League volleyball action.
Match scores were 17-25, 26-24, 25-13, 19-25, 15-11.
The 12 straight wins were tied for the second longest streak in program history.
The Vikings, who had not lost since a 3-2 setback at Butler on Sept. 25, fell to 23-6 overall, but remained in first place in the Horizon League at 11-2.
UIC improved to 15-13 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Beth Greulich led the Vikings with 20 kills, while Liz Fazio added 16 and Amy Benz nine. Jordan Goad finished with 47 assists, 10 digs and six kills, while Amy Grabiec made 20 digs.
"UIC came out with a lot of emotion and fire tonight and it carried over the entire match," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We didn't play our best tonight and they were able to take advantage of some of our mistakes."
CSU made 11 service errors.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead to open the match and would use nine UIC attack errors in the set to claim a 1-0 lead. Leading 16-13, CSU would go on a 5-1 run to open up a 21-14 advantage and never look back.
The Flames controlled most of the second set and led 24-18 after a kill by Janise Dismuke. However. CSU staved off six straight set points to tie the set at 24-24, but back-to-back kills by UIC evened the match at 1-1.
UIC would continue its good play in the third set, hitting .414 and limiting the Vikings to a .119 attack percentage in taking a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was close for most of the way, featuring nine tie scores and five lead changes. The last tie came at 18-18, but from there, the Vikings scored five straight points, including a pair of kills from Greulich, to take a 23-18 lead, eventually forcing a deciding set.
CSU took an 8-5 lead in the fifth set, but a 4-1 run by the Flames evened up the set at 9-9. From there, the Flames would close the set on a 6-2 run to earn the win.
Dismuke led the Flames with 13 kills, while three other players had 12 each.
The Vikings will be back in action on Friday (Nov. 6) when CSU travels to Green Bay for an 8:00 p.m. EST match.
