CLEVELAND, Ohio - Amy Benz had 13 kills and Beth Greulich added 11 as Cleveland State earned a 3-0 sweep over UIC in Horizon League volleyball action on Friday night in Woodling Gym.

The win improved CSU to 14-5 overall and into a first place tie in the league at 3-1, while UIC fell to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the Horizon League.

Liz Fazio finished with eight kills and 12 digs, while Kara Koch added seven kills and six digs. Jordan Goad added 37 assists and eight digs and Maggie Bonomini recorded a match-best 17 digs.

"I liked the way we played today and thought we did some great things," head coach Chuck Voss said. "UIC is a great team with a lot of talent and I never thought we were in total control of the match because they battled so hard. But we continued to fight and played well on defense and Beth and Amy were fantastic on offense tonight."

Match scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-15.

CSU held a slim two point lead (11-9) in the first set, but went on to score the next five points, including two kills from Greulich, to take a 16-9 lead. The Vikings would push the advantage to as many as eight points in taking the first set.

The Vikings jumped on UIC quickly in the second set, racing out to a 5-1 lead. However, the Flames would battle back and took their first lead of the set (13-12) on a CSU attack error that also forced a Viking timeout.

CSU came out of the break on a 5-1 run to take a 17-14 lead, eventually pushing the lead to as many as seven points (23-16) on a UIC ball handling error.

The third set was close to start with the Flames taking a 5-4 lead early on following a CSU attack error. However, a 10-3 run by CSU followed, giving the Vikings a 14-8 lead on a Koch kill and the Flames would not threaten the rest of the way as CSU earned its 11th sweep of the season.

Epiphany Davis led the Flames with nine kills, while Jessica Dalke handed out 23 assists with 15 digs.

The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 3) when CSU hosts Loyola at 4:00 p.m. in Woodling Gym.
