BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Cleveland State shot rounds of 294-302 (596) and is in fifth place after the first day of the John Piper Invitational which is being hosted by Bowling Green at the at the par-72, 7,064-yard Sand Ridge Golf Club.
Despite being in fifth place, the Vikings are within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard, just 10 shots out of first place and six shots out of third place.
"It was an odd day out there for us," head coach Steve Weir said. "Everybody hit the ball well, but we just couldn't score. The greens were very tough because they haven't had much rain out here so you couldn't go at the pins. We'll have a little team meeting tonight and come out tomorrow and try to move up the standings."
Jake Scott shot rounds of 72-73 (145) and is tied for fifth place heading into the final round. He is five shots behind co-leaders Matt Schneider of Bowling Green (70-70) and John Mlynarski of Ohio (70-70).
Kyle Cobb is all alone in 18th place for the Vikings following rounds of 73-77 (150), while Kent Monas is tied for 23rd place after carding 73-79 (152).
