FRANKLIN, Pa. - Cleveland State shot a final round 297 and finished ninth of 12 teams at the season opening Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The 54-hole event was played at the par-72, 7,269-yard Nemacolin Wood G.C.

"It wasn't the best way to open the season, but I did see some good things this weekend," head coach Steve Weir said. "We had a great start today and played really well through 14 holes. But the final four holes, especially nine, gave us fits today and all weekend. It was disappointing to not be able to move up in the team race, but we'll prepare for next weekend and keep working on our swings and putting strokes."

Jake Scott led CSU as he tied for 20th place with rounds of 77-76-73 (226), while Kyle Cobb tied for 29th with a 54-hole total of 228 (75-79-74).

The Vikings finished ninth as a team (911), concluding the event with a 297 today after back-to-back rounds of 307.

CSU was just three shots behind Ball State and Bowling Green who tied for seventh and four shots behind sixth place Xavier (907).

Purdue won the tournament with a 54-hole total of 871 (298-288-285) and was followed by Virginia Commonwealth (886), Penn State (889), Miami (Ohio) (891) and Missouri (898).

The Vikings will return to action on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 8-9) when CSU competes at the John Piper Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.
