Volleyball Sweeps Murray State, 3-0

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Cleveland State junior Jenni Ramminger recorded a match-best 14 kills and sophomore Liz Fazio added 13 as the Vikings rolled to a 30-26, 30-22, 30-21 win over Murray State on Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Southern Illinois Invitational at Davis Gym.

"We had a great game plan and executed it very well," head coach Chuck Voss said. "Our defense was outstanding and we forced them into a lot of errors."

Game one featured 10 ties, including the final time at 25-25. From there, CSU scored five of the last six points to earn the win. In game two, the Vikings raced out to a quick 7-3 lead and hit .394 (19-6-33) to claim a 2-0 lead. CSU completed the sweep with a dominating defensive performance in game three as the Vikings held Murray State to a -.114 hitting percentage.

Senior Mel Snyder dished out 36 assists and directed the Vikings to a .294 (47-17-102) hitting percentage. Junior Jordan Bateman and sophomore Kayla Lefeld tied for match-high honors with eight digs apiece.

The Viking defense was strong all match as it forced the Racers into a dismal .008 hitting percentage and 31 attack errors. In addition, CSU totaled 22 blocks, including seven from freshman Amy Benz.

Alison Mugler and Sara Hayden led the Racers with 10 kills each, while Cassie Chesney tallied 27 assists.

CSU (6-4) will conclude play at the Southern Illinois Invitational with a match against UMKC on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
