CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State's Beth Greulich tied for match-high honors with 11 kills and hit .409 (11-2-22) as the Vikings earned a 30-24, 30-17, 30-24 sweep of Green Bay in Horizon League volleyball action Friday night at Woodling Gym.
"I thought we were a little too excited coming out, but we really settled down about halfway through the first game," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We started to play really well and were in the right positions to make plays. We put a lot of pressure on them."
CSU improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Green Bay slipped to 3-11 and 1-4 in the Horizon League.
The Vikings trailed in game one, 20-19, but closed the match on an 11-4 run, including three kills and a block from Greulich, to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In game two, CSU used runs of 7-0 and 5-0 in cruising to a 2-0 lead. But Green Bay would not go away easily as it scored the first three points of game three, only to watch the Vikings rally and gain the a 13-9 advantage on a Mel Snyder kills.
However, the Phoenix hung around and rallied to tie the match at 14-14, but that would be as close as they would get the remainder of the night as the Vikings hit .295 for the match, while holding Green Bay to a .074 hitting percentage.
In addition, CSU produced more kills (53-33), assists (51-32) and digs (72-47).
Snyder finished with 33 assists, seven digs and six kills for CSU, while Alexis Korovich notched her fourth consecutive double-double as she ended the match with 11 kills and 13 digs.
"Lexi has been playing really well for the last three weeks or so," Voss said. "She's be working hard in practice and that has really translated well to the games."
Green Bay (3-11, 1-4 HL) was led by Nikkie Hintze who tied for match-high honors with 11 kills.
CSU will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Milwaukee at 4:00 pm in Woodling Gym. Milwaukee, which played at Youngstown State on Friday night, has won 13 straight since a season opening loss to Wisconsin.
"Milwaukee has been the barometer in the league for the last several years and I'm looking forward to seeing how we stack up against them," Voss said.
