YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Cleveland State head volleyball coach Chuck Voss earned his 150th career win and moved into second place on the all-time wins list at CSU (117) as the Vikings downed Youngstown State, 22-30, 30-17, 30-25, 30-28, in Horizon League action Friday night at the Beeghly Center.
"It's nice to reach that number, but I want to win a championship," Voss said. "That's the number one goal."
CSU scored the first three points of the match, but the Penguins rallied back with three straight of their own and extended the lead to 11-7. Following a CSU timeout, the Vikings went on a 7-1 run highlighted by two kills from junior Jenni Ramminger to claim a 14-12 lead. YSU responded with its own 8-2 run to regain a four point advantage (20-16) and force another CSU timeout. From there, the Penguins outscored CSU, 10-6, to claim a 1-0 lead as they hit .375 and held the Vikings to a .000 hitting percentage.
"Youngstown State came out strong and played well," Voss said. "We gave them a few points in game one, but we really settled down and played well after that."
The Vikings rebounded nicely to win game two as they hit .351 (17-4-37) behind five kills from sophomore Alexis Korovich and four apiece from Ramminger and sophomore Beth Greulich.
The 10 minute intermission couldn't slow down the Vikings as they took a 14-11 lead in game three and extended that advantage to 22-11 with eight consecutive points. The Penguins finally stopped the bleeding by scoring three straight, but it was too late as CSU opened up a two games to one lead.
The Penguins refused to go away as they took a 16-13 lead in game four, only to watch as the Vikings tallied six of the next seven points to take a 19-17 lead. However, YSU responded with a 7-1 run to gain a 24-20 lead, but the resilient Vikings scored 10 of the final 14 points, including the final one on a block by Ramminger.
CSU improved to 9-5 this year and 2-1 in league play, while the Penguins fell to 6-8 (0-3 HL).
Korovich led the Vikings with her third straight double-double as she tallied 17 kills and 14 digs. Liz Fazio added 12 kills, while Mel Snyder dished out 45 assists.
YSU was led by Jessica Fraley who posted 17 kills and Karla Everhart who handed out 46 assists.
CSU will have a week off before returning to action next Friday (Sept. 28) for a 7:00 pm home match against Green Bay at Woodling Gym. It will be just the second home match of the season for the Vikings who opened the season by playing 13 of their first 14 matches outside of Cleveland.
"It will be nice to play at home," Voss said. "We've opened league play on the road for six straight seasons, so we are looking forward to having a normal week and playing in front of our home fans. I think it's exactly what we need."
