LAWRENCE, Kansas - Cleveland State shot rounds of 299 and 309 and is tied for ninth place after the opening day of the Kansas Invitational on Monday. The 16-team field is playing the par-72, 7,092-yard Alvamar Golf Club.
Playing in hot, windy conditions, the Vikings went out in the morning round and carded a 299 to stand fourth after the opening 18 holes. However, CSU gave back a few shots in the afternoon en route to a 309.
"The conditions were as hot and windy as we are going to play in all year," CSU head coach Steve Weir said. "It got tougher as the day went on and was a mental grind for the guys."
Kansas leads the team race with a 590 total, while Kansas State is second, five strokes back. Oral Roberts, UNC-Wilmington and Houston are in a three-way tie for third place at 596.
Individually, CSU junior Jake Scott fired rounds of 73-74 (147) and is tied for 10th place. However, he is just three shots out of the lead held by Jordan Irwin (74-70) of Houston.
The event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
