CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State ran its win streak to eight straight and clinched its sixth straight winning season with a 30-28, 30-25, 30-26 victory over Butler in Horizon League action Friday night in Woodling Gym.
The Vikings, who improved to 15-5 overall (8-1 HL), assured itself of a sixth consecutive winning season, the second longest streak in school history. The mark trails the record of seven set from 1972-78.
"I was extremely happy with the way we played and the effort we gave tonight," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "There were a lot of big points out there and we did a great job to with a majority of them. We are playing some of our best volleyball of the season right now and need to continue playing with confidence."
Alexis Korovich was the lone Viking to reach double digit kills, but she finished with a match-best 18. In addition, Korovich recorded 11 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double and fourth straight.
Beth Greulich added eight kills, while Mel Snyder finished with 40 assists, nine digs and six kills. Maggie Bonomini registered a match-best 12 digs.
CSU raced out to an 18-12 lead in game one, but the Bulldogs went on a 12-3 run to gain a 24-21 lead. However, the Vikings responded with five consecutive points, four on attack errors from Butler, to take a 26-24 lead and closed out the match on a service ace from Kayla Lefeld.
Bonomini helped CSU to a 6-0 lead in game two as she served six straight points. However, the Bulldogs responded with nine of the next 12 points to knot the game at 9-9. With the score tied again, 14-14, the Vikings used a 9-3 run to seize control (23-17) of the game and took a 2-0 lead when Sienna Steinle recorded her seventh ace of the season.
Down 2-0, Butler refused to go away as the Bulldogs were even with CSU after the first 20 points of the match (10-10). But once again, CSU went on a 5-0 run, including three kills from Korovich, to gain a 15-10 lead. The Bulldogs (9-11, 3-6 HL) managed to rally and pull within one at 25-24, but the Vikings scored five of the final seven points to earn the sweep as Snyder ended the match with CSU's seventh and final ace.
Porshia Allen led Butler with 17 kills and seven digs, while Katie Daprile added 15 kills.
