 Western Michigan's Terry Dowding scored the match's only goal to give the Broncos a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State at Krenzler Field on Sunday (Sept. 3) afternoon. With the loss, the Vikings' first under head coach Ali Kazemaini, CSU falls to 2-1-1 on the season.

Dowding's game-winner came off a cross from Tom Oatley at the 77:42 mark. Dowding chipped in the shot past CSU goalkeeper Kasey Gray in the box center, five yards out.

"They caught us in a defensive breakdown," Kazemaini said. "We didn't retreat properly and they made us pay for the mistake."

CSU's best chance to score came off the foot of freshman Josh Williams in the first half. Williams banged a shot just over the crossbar and Western Michigan avoided the threat.

"We had our chances, and so did they," Kazemaini said. "I felt the match was pretty even. When you lose, there is always something to learn. Hopefully, we learned something today and we can build on that."

The Broncos outshot the Vikings, 10-6, for the match, evenly divided into a 5-3 advantage in both halves. CSU held the edge in corner kicks, 6-3, and Western Michigan was whistled for 20 fouls to Cleveland State's 14.

Six different Vikings recorded shots during the match, with freshman Andrew Gutting recording the lone shot on goal.

Gray played all 90 minutes in goal for the Vikings, posting one save. He now has allowed just two goals in 270 minutes in goal.

The Vikings travel to Marshall on Wednesday (Sept. 6) for a 7:00 p.m. match. They will be at home next Saturday (Sept. 9) for their Horizon League opener against UW-Green Bay. The match against the Phoenix is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
