Final Stats

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State made quick work of Loyola in its Horizon League home-opener, defeating the Ramblers 30-27, 30-21, 30-23 in front of 248 fans in Woodling Gymnasium on Friday night. CSU improves to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the Horizon League with its 10th sweep of the year, while Loyola drops to 7-10, 1-2.

The Vikings kept the Ramblers at bay with 11 aces, holding a .282 to .168 advantage in hitting percentage. CSU also out-blocked (8-6) and out-dug Loyola (57-46) en route to its third straight win in the series.

"Our serving was huge for us tonight," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "We were able to keep them out of system quite a bit and when we passed well we were tough to stop. Mel [Snyder] did a real nice job of getting Beth [Greulich] the ball in one-on-one situations."

Freshman Beth Greulich posted career-highs for kills (12) and hitting percentage (.647) while adding three blocks. Freshman Liz Fazio added 10 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while junior Mel Snyder tallied 36 assists, seven kills and seven digs. Sophomore Jordan Bateman led all players with 20 digs.

Dan VanDiggelen paced the Ramblers with 11 kills, while Sarah Elmer notched 30 assists, eight kills and eight digs.

Cleveland State closes out its weekend homestand when the Vikings host UIC on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 4:00 p.m.
