GREEN BAY, Wis. -
Cleveland State opened Horizon League play with a road victory for the first time since the 1997 season, sweeping UW-Green Bay, 30-21, 30-26, 30-17, in the league opener for both schools on Friday night. The Vikings won their ninth match in a row as head coach Chuck Voss collected his 100th victory during his seven-year tenure at CSU.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league, while the Phoenix falls to 5-7, 0-1.
"I didn't even know until someone congratulated me after the match, that it was my 100th win," said Voss. "It's an achievement that is more of a testament to the players that we've been able to bring in than anything I've done."
Cleveland State had 15 more kills than UWGB (50-35) and dominated in hitting percentage (.224 to .065) en route to defeating the Phoenix for the fourth time in the last five meetings.
The Vikings dominated games one and three, and rallied from a 25-20 deficit in the second frame to earn their ninth three-game victory of the season.
"Even though we got out-blocked in the stats, we did a great job of getting a lot of touches that led to easy transitions," Voss said. "Anytime you can win on the road it's nice. It definitely wasn't easy tonight, but we played very aggressively and were very tough to defend when we were in system."
Freshman Liz Fazio posted 11 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season, while classmate Alexis Korivich tallied 11 kills and seven digs. Freshman Beth Greulich added 10 kills and sophomore Jordan Bateman added a match-high 14 digs.
Betty Slinger notched a triple-double with 11 kills, 21 assists and 12 digs to leads UW-Green Bay.
Cleveland State is in action again on Saturday when the Vikings complete their Wisconsin road swing with a 4:00 p.m. CDT match at UW-Milwaukee.
