MOBILE, Ala. -- Cleveland State controlled play for most of the match but South Alabama was the only team to put a goal on the scoreboard, scoring on a second half penalty shot to outlast the Vikings, 1-0, in the second round of the KELME Port City Classic.
CSU sophomore Ashley Walchack and freshman Allie Riczo were each named to the all-tournament team.
"This is a very tough loss because of how badly we controlled play," head coach Derrek Falor said. "It was the story of our weekend. We controlled tempo. We controlled the ball but we couldn't put the ball in the net.
The match was decided in the 63rd minute when South Alabama's Kelly Tarrant scored on a penalty kick after the Vikings were called for a foul in the box during a transition play.
"The foul came on a three-on-three situation," Falor said. "We made the right play, but were a little too aggressive and got called for the foul. It was a tough call."
The loss was almost identical to Friday night's 1-0 loss to Nicholls State in the opening round of the tourney, a match that saw CSU have a 21-10 shot advantage. The Vikings out-shot South Alabama, 8-7, but none of the Jaguar shots were on goal. In addition, CSU was called six times for being offsides.
"The game had an interesting tempo," Falor said. "We would control the ball for an extended period until South Alabama would take control and launch a long shot towards goal and then we'd go back to controlling play. There weren't any real threats against us."
Falor singled out the play of Viking midfielders Heather Clapacs, Lisa Conway and Allie Riczo for the performance. "Our midfielders really did a nice job. If we can continue to play like this, it will help us down the road."
