Valparaiso scored three goals in the second half to pull ahead and defeat Cleveland State, 4-1, on Friday (Sept. 1) at Eastgate Field in Valparaiso, Ind. The Vikings fell to 1-2 with the loss.

The Crusaders (2-1) took an early 1-0 lead at the 4:03 mark when VU's Sarah Jewell scored off a rebound. CSU would answer quickly, netting the equalizer when freshman Heather Wagner banged in a rebound off junior Shayna Back's shot. The tally was Wagner's first as a Viking. The score would remain tied at one the rest of the first half.

"Valpo got out to that early lead but we did a nice job of battling back," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We played some very nice soccer at times in the first half, but we kind of ran out of gas."

Valpo broke the tie just 1:14 into the second half and then extended its lead to 3-1 at the 62:16 mark when VU's Kendall Brown broke away from the Vikings defense near midfield and scored.

"We had too many defensive mistakes," Falor said. "We let Valpo's defensive pressure take us out of our rhythm and it translated into opportunities for them."

The Vikings continue their road swing this weekend, traveling to IUPUI on Sunday (Sept. 3) for a 1:00 p.m. match at Kuntz Stadium on the west side of Indianapolis.
