YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Senior Danielle Siefker and freshman Liz Fazio combined for 25 kills and Cleveland State held Youngstown State to .146 hitting en route to a 31-29, 30-26, 30-27 sweep of the Penguins. The win moves the Vikings to 14-5 overall and 4-3 in Horizon League, while Youngstown State falls to 8-15 and 0-7 in league play.

Siefker notched 13 kills on .357 hitting and added five blocks to pace the Vikings' offense. Fazio had 12 kills on .222 hitting.

"I thought Danielle did a nice job of making plays and controlling things at the net for us," head coach Chuck Voss said.

The early moments of the first game definitely did not foreshadow the end result, as YSU jumped out to a 10-5 lead before CSU called timeout. The Vikings would tie the match at 16 as the two teams went back and forth. With game one tied at 29, CSU got kills from Siefker and Fazio to claim the first stanza.

The Penguins once again jumped out to an early lead in the second game, 10-8, before the Vikings rattled off five straight points to take a 13-10 advantage. CSU's lead would grow as large as 27-20 after a kill off the hand of freshman Beth Greulich before the Vikings eventually won the second game.

Voss said the key was the Vikings' stellar play on defense.

"I thought we did a good job blocking tonight," he said. "We have been working on that a lot in practice and we looked a lot better than we have recently. Our back line made a lot of plays on defense as well."

The third game was the exact opposite of the first two, as CSU jumped out to a 10-2 edge. YSU took the lead at 16-15 and 18-17 before the Vikings went on a four-point run to lead, 21-18. The Penguins fought back to tie the game at 26, but CSU stopped the rally by taking four of the match's last five points to claim the road victory.

Greulich had nine kills on .600 hitting and junior Mel Snyder handed out 38 assists. Sophomore Jordan Batemand and freshman Alexis Korovich paced the team with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

Ruth Boscaljon led the Penguins with a match-high 17 kills on .414 hitting.

The Vikings return to the court next Friday (Oct. 20) at home against UW-Milwaukee. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
