CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Toledo used four second half goals to break open a close match and upend the Vikings, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field.
The deciding factor in the contest was on the bench where Toledo used its overwhelming depth to wear down Cleveland State. The Rockets used 24 players in the match, including 19 in the first half.
"We played about as good of a first half as we have all year," head coach Derrek Falor said. "Our defense was working well together and offensively we were possessing the ball well. Then we hit halftime and the entire match changed.
"Toledo's fresh legs really hurt us. They were able to run players in and out during the first half so when the second half came, they could make the long runs to the ball. Our fatigue had nothing to do with conditioning. It had everything to do with our short bench trying to keep up with all of their substitutes."
Toledo opened the scoring at the 23:08 mark when Kelly Langenbeck scored the first of her two goals. Langenbeck took a feed fro Kristen Friedmann and blasted a shot from 15 yards out on the right wing.
The score would hold until the 55th minute. Pam Richard blasted a shot from in close that CSU's Erin Withrow stopped but could not control, allowing Pene Hughes to pounce on it and score on the rebound.
The Toledo depth began to show after that. Langenbeck made it 3-0 when she scored from 20 yards out in the 66th minute. At the 77:13 mark, Diane Ginley scored from 15 yards out on the left side and Anne Sullivan quickly followed with the final goal from 20 yards out at the 81:01 mark.
Toledo outshot the Vikings, 18-6, with Withrow recording seven saves in goal for the Vikings.
Cleveland State continues its non-conference schedule with three matches this week, starting with a 7:00 p.m. match at Krenzler Field on Tuesday night against Niagara.
