Cleveland State overcame a 19-point second-half deficit Saturday against visiting California to send the game into overtime, but the Vikings came up short in overtime and lost to the Golden Bears 73-64 at Goodman Arena.

After a dunk by Cal's Joe Shipp with 13:39 left, the Vikings trailed 49-30. However, CSU used a 26-8 run over the next 10:43 as Jermaine Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) scored 10 points of his team-high 20 points in the span. Robinson also penetrated the lane before dishing off to Modibo Niakate (Paris, France/Hutchinson C.C.) in the right corner for a trey to close within three, 57-54. On the ensuing playing, Tahric Gosley (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz)picked off a pass at midcourt and followed with a slam to bring the Vikes within one, 57-56.

Cal's Brian Wethers pushed the advantage back to 59-56 with a 15-foot jumper. Gosley split a pair of free throws a 1:27 and closed out scoring in regulation with a dunk at 0:45 to tie the game at 59-all.

Both teams had chances to score in the final 45 seconds. Cal's A.J. Diggs missed a jumper and the rebound resulted in a jump ball that went to CSU with 31 seconds remaining. A scramble for a loose ball at midcourt resulted in another jump ball being called with 4.7 tics remaining and the advantage went to the Golden Bears.

In overtime, Cal jumped out 63-60 on scores by Wethers and Shipp and held on for the win as the Vikings scored just two buckets from the field.

Shipp finished with a game-high 30 points, going 12-of-18 from the field, for the 2-0 Bears while Wethers added 18.

The Vikings, 2-3, got 13 points from Pape Badiane (les Ulis, France/Faith Christian Academy) and 12 from Gosley.

Cal held a 38-34 edge on the boards as Wethers pulled down eight rebounds. Badiane and Niakate also grabbed eight apiece for the Vikings to share game honors.

Cleveland State returns to action Wednesday when the Vikings travel to nearby Akron to match up with the Zips at 7:30 p.m. at the J.A.R. Arena.
