CLEVELAND -
The Cleveland State women's basketball team held on to defeat the Ohio Girls Basketball Magazine (OGBM) Legends by a slim, 85-84, margin in exhibition action this evening in Goodman Arena. The Vikings missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with eight seconds left, but the Legends turned the ball over and were unable to get off a shot.
Sophomore guard Erika Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) paced CSU with 20 points and four assists. Senior forward Mahogany Green (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher) added 19 points and eight rebounds, while Kim Brockway (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) and Bridget Oberer (Chillicothe, Ohio/Teays Valley) finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
OGBM forward Wanda Ford led all players with 31 points and 16 rebounds, while forward Dawn Hutcherson also finished with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds. Larecha Jones and Bonnie Dove added 17 and 16 points, respectively.
The Legends finished with a 61-39 margin on the boards and scored 48 of their points in the paint. Cleveland State countered with nine three-pointers and 20 fast break points.
"Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good," said Viking head coach Duffy Burns. "Winning exhibition games is great, but they really show what you need to work on. Obviously we need to improve our post defense. It is also obvious to me that Wanda Ford should be playing in the WNBA."
Cleveland State kicks off the regular season Friday, Nov. 17 when the Vikings welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes to Goodman Arena for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
