Frank Young

Frank Young begins his second year as associate head coach of the Cleveland State men’s basketball team.

Young helped with bringing in an entire new team in his first year, aiding the Vikings to an 11-22 overall record and a 6-14 mark in Horizon League games. Young assisted in three players receiving Horizon League honors with two special awards: Chevalier Emery (Sixth Man of the Year) and Tre Beard (Sportsmanship Award). Dayan Nessah was named to the All-League Third Team.

In year one, the team set season records in three-pointers made (357), three-pointers attempted (953), and free throw percentage (.753). The Vikings also finished with the fourth most points in a season (2,633) and on the fourth most field goals made (965) and attempted (2,136). Shooting from beyond the arc was a big factor, tying the game record (16) on four occasions before breaking it with 17 against Oakland inside Woodling Gymnasium.

Off the court, the Green and White had the highest GPA in the department for men’s sports with a 3.62 GPA. Ten players were named to the Dean’s List while the entire team had a GPA above a 3.00.

Prior to Cleveland State, Young coached at Appalachian State for six seasons, spending four as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach for two seasons. Young helped the Mountaineers to a program-record 27 wins in 2023-24 and a regular season Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Young spent two seasons at Presbyterian where helped the team in all facets of the program.

Young worked three seasons at North Florida as director of operations, helping UNF qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and the NIT in 2016.
Young began his coaching career at West Virginia Wesleyan during the 2013-14 season.

Prior to his time in coaching, Young logged five seasons of professional playing experience overseas. He played for EnBW Ludwigsburg (2007), Rotterdame Challengers (2008), Landstede Club (2008-09) and the Crailsheim Merlins (2010-11).

Young played four seasons at West Virginia, where he was teammates with Coach Summers in 2006 and 2007. Over his time, he averaged 7.4 points per game and played in 125 career games. Young set the school record with 117 three-pointers in his senior season while leading the team to an NIT Championship.
 
Young earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from West Virginia in 2007 and later earned a master’s degree from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2013. He is joined in Cleveland by his wife Kierra and his son Kade.
