Cleveland State Men's Soccer Uses Strong First Half to Defeat Canisius, 3-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Vikings (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the year behind a strong first half, defeating Canisius (0-3-0) 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

Cleveland State claimed the 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute when Djordje Petrovic converted from the spot. Tom Mertz then bagged goals in the 30th and 39th minutes, extending the lead to 3-0.
Ognjen Bozovic assisted on the first goal, and Domenic Ruggiero followed with the first of his career.

Canisius ruined the shutout in the 73rd minute behind a penalty kick.

The Vikings dominated the shot count with a 17-3 edge including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Mertz had a game-best eight shots with half of those on frame. Lennart Heck, Petrovic, and Ruggiero all had two shots apiece.

Aleksandar Kolar picked up his first collegiate win after making a save.

The Green and White get back on Krenzler Field on Saturday, Sept. 5 against FAU at 7 p.m.
