LEXINGTON, Va. – The Vikings (4-5, 2-1) had no trouble playing on the road for the first time in a month as 13 different players scored in the 20-7 victory over VMI (4-5, 1-2) on Saturday afternoon.
VMI started fast, scoring just 29 seconds into the game for its only lead of the day. The Vikings answered right back with three consecutive goals to lead 3-1 with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter.
The Keydets got a goal back before two more Cleveland State goals made it 5-1 heading into the second. All five goals in the quarter were scored by different CSU players. A man-up goal for the home team started the second quarter before Cleveland State rattled off four straight goals to lead 9-3 at the 4:05 mark. Four different Vikings accounted for goals in the stretch.
Following a VMI goal,
Brennen Hickey completed the first half hat-trick to give the Green and White a 10-4 advantage at halftime.
Out of the halftime break,
Luke Ray and
Ethan Brooks found the back of the net, stretching the margin to 12-4 with 9:06 left in the third. VMI responded with back-to-back strikes to climb within six at the 6:11 mark.
An unassisted
Will Adair goal followed by a
Landon Whalen man-up strike bumped the lead to 15-6 with 1:26 showing. The Keydets scored the final goal of the quarter with 25 ticks to trail 15-7 heading into the fourth.
Cleveland State accounted for all five goals in the fourth quarter as the Green and White cruised to the 20-7 victory. All five goals were scored by different players.
Hickey led the attack with five points on five goals and an assist.
Xander Johnson and
Adam Van Voorhis each finished with two assists.
Robbie Stewart went 14-of-26 in the faceoff circle.
Payton Corpus led the game with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Justin Dalum returned to the cage after missing the previous two games, finishing with ten saves.
Cleveland State returns home on Saturday as Wagner comes to Krenzler Field for a noon faceoff.
