MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out its trip to Milwaukee Saturday, dropping a hard-fought five-set match.
Offensively, the Vikings were led by
Bryn VanVleet with 16 kills while
Addison Koppelman added 10 and
Jazen DeBina chipped in nine.
Allison Salazar recorded 41 assists on the match, along with 15 digs for her first double-double of the season.
In addition to Salazar, Koppelman and
Vayda Delventhal both added 15 digs on the match to lead the Viking defense.
As a team, the Vikings combined for 15.0 blocks on the match, including nine from
Julia Jozefov and five from
JeriLynn Koehler.
Cleveland State recorded nine service aces on the day, including two each from DeBina, VanVleet and Salazar.
After dropping the first set, the Vikings battled for a 28-26 victory during the second set to even the score at 1-1.
Despite trailing for the majority of the set, the Vikings worked their way back into the frame throughout the last half, closing the gap to two points at 22-20 following an
Addison Koppelman kill, before a
Bryn VanVleet kill and
Julia Jozefov/
Allison Salazar block knotted the score at 22-22.
Cleveland State then earned its first lead of the set with another VanVleet kill, before earning set point at 24-23 on yet another kill from VanVleet. Although the Panthers were able to notch the next two points, the Vikings answered with back-to-back kills from
JeriLynn Koehler and VanVleet, before earning their third set point at 27-26 on a kill from
Jazen DeBina.
The Vikings then put the set away with a Koppelman kill, knotting the match at 1-1 heading into the third set.
Cleveland State carried its momentum into the third set then, opening the frame with an 11-4 advantage. Although Milwaukee was able to work its way back into the set, the Vikings answered with three straight points late in the frame, earning a 22-20 edge on a Koehler and DeBina block.
The Vikings then earned set point on a Koppelman kill, before another Koppelman kill closed out the 25-22 third set victory.
Milwaukee responded with a win in the fourth frame, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
Although the Panthers were able to get out to a quick lead in the final set the Vikings worked their way back in with another Koehler and Salazar block and a VanVleet kill, knotting the score at 11-11. Milwaukee was then able to control the rest of the frame, coming away with the 15-13 deciding set win.
Cleveland State will return home next weekend, hosting Youngstown State for a two-match series on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17.
