Cleveland State Men's Basketball Topples Wright State on the Road, 85-79

DAYTON, Ohio – Cleveland State (7-14, 3-7) picked up its first road win of the season, 85-79, at first-place Wright State (12-8, 7-2) on Wednesday evening. This marks the first victory away from the Wolstein Center for Coach Summers.

The Vikings had four double-digit scorers on the evening, led by Dayan Nessah with a season-and-game-best 31 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. The sophomore has reached double-digits in 16 games this season while recording his third double-double with a game-best ten rebounds. The sophomore also tied for a game-best five assists.

Tre Beard finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and Jaidon Lipscomb chipped in 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Both Beard and Lipscomb connected on four three-pointers. Chevalier Emery came off the bench with ten points.

The Green and White shot 51 percent from the field on 27-of-53 shooting, knocked down 11-of-23 from beyond the arc, and were 20-of-22 at the free throw line.

Cleveland State took its first advantage of the night on a Beard three-pointer before Wright State answered with an 11-2 run to take a 15-7 lead with 13:22 remaining in the half. Over the next three minutes, the Vikings used an 11-4 run, capped by a David Giddens three-pointer, to get within one, 19-18, at the 10:38 mark.

The Raiders maintained the lead until Lipscomb knocked down a corner three to even the game at 26-26 with 5:15 left in the first half. Following a Wright State three-pointer, the Green and White rattled off eight straight points to force a timeout, leading 34-29 with 2:04 to go. Nessah accounted for six of the points, and Foster Wonders had the other two.

Cleveland State maintained a 40-33 advantage at the half behind a game-best ten points from Nessah.

A Beard three-pointer gave the Vikings their largest lead of the game, 47-37, when Wright State used an 18-0 run to reclaim a 55-47 lead with 10:44 remaining in regulation. However, Cleveland State regrouped with an 8-2 spurt to climb back within a possession, 57-55, with 9:32 to go in the game.

Wright State maintained the lead until Nessah converted on a layup while being fouled, tying the game at 65-65 with 5:49 showing. After the Raiders matched the old-fashioned three-point play, Cleveland State went on an 8-0 run, which started with an Emery three-pointer and was capped off with a Lipscomb three-pointer to lead 73-68 with 3:38 to go.

The Vikings stayed on top until a TJ Burch layup and free throw put the home team ahead 79-77 with 1:17 left in the contest. Cleveland State then took control of the game, scoring the final eight points to win 85-79. Nessah accounted for six of those points for the Green and White.

The Vikings will have nine days off before heading out on the yearly Wisconsin trip, starting with Green Bay on Friday, January 30, at 7 p.m.
