CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings (0-0-1) opened the 2025 season with a 1-1 draw against Santa Clara (0-0-1) on Thursday evening.
Cleveland State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute as reigning Freshman of the Year,
Matteo Correia, volleyed in a pass from
Djordje Petrovic. The Broncos would find the equalizer in the 19th minute as Simon Diagana headed in a ball from Ethan Martinez.
The scoreline remained deadlocked at one at the break, with the visitors holding a 10-4 advantage in shots.
The second half was a stalemate, with the Green and White being outshot narrowly 3-2.
Each team had three corner kicks in the game and two shots on goal.
Peleg Armendariz finished with two shots, while Correa and
Tom Mertz each had one shot on goal.
Ryan Poling made one save on the night.
Cleveland State will now head out West to take on Grand Canyon on Monday, Aug. 25 at 10 p.m.
