Cleveland State Softball Drops Two on Final Day of Racer Invitational

Murray, KY-The Cleveland State softball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Saturday with two games at the Racer Invitational. The Vikings fell to Akron 9-1 in six innings in the first game of the day and fell 9-0 to host Murray State in five innings in the second game. Cleveland State finishes 2-2 in the tournament and sits at 5-12 overall headed into Horizon League play next week.

Cleveland State took an early 1-0 lead in the first game against Akron as Kylie Gorsuch singled to right-center field to bring home Brooke Albaugh in the top of the first inning. Akron countered with four runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take a commanding lead.

Cleveland State tallied seven hits in the game but could not bring another run across. Akron scored a single run in the sixth to make it 9-1 and end the game due to the run rule. Cleveland State was tagged with three errors in the game resulting in six unearned runs.

In the second game Murray State struck early and often as the Racers scored one in the first and four more in the second and third innings to quickly go up 9-0. The Vikings tallied four hits in the second game but could not find a rhythm offensively and were held off the scoreboard.

Conference play begins next weekend as the Vikings travel to Youngstown State for the first Horizon League weekend series of the season. The Vikings and Penguins will face off starting on Friday with a single game.
