Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match At Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team played its final road match of the 2025 regular season Friday, dropping a five-set match at Youngstown State.

Four Vikings finished with double-digit kills, led by Bryn VanVleet with 17. Laken Voss and Chloe List both added 11, while Abbi Martin tallied 10.

Allison Salazar notched 52 assists along with 11 digs and eight kills.

Voss led the Viking defense with 23 digs, while Vayda Delventhal added 21.

As a team, Cleveland State recorded 8.0 total blocks, including five from Magaly Lemus

After dropping the first two sets, the Vikings were able to swing the momentum in their favor during set three, picking up a 25-23 victory.

Cleveland State then carried its momentum into the fourth set, as back-to-back points on an Isabella Gibbons service ace and Chloe List kill put the Vikings up 8-5 early in the frame. The Vikings then extended their lead midway through the set, with a pair of Abbi Martin kills giving Cleveland State a 13-8 advantage.

The Vikings then added on three additional points, earning a 16-8 edge following back-to-back Bryn VanVleet kills. Cleveland State then controlled play throughout the rest of the frame, with an Allison Salazar kill closing out the 25-19 fourth set victory.

During the fifth and final set the Vikings were able to open with a 3-1 run on a trio of kills from VanVleet and Martin, before YSU answered with three straight points to regain the lead. The two teams then traded points over the next few plays, until YSU was able to earn a 9-6 lead following three straight points.

The Penguins then extended their scoring run to nine straight points, coming out on top of the 15-6 fifth set victory.

Cleveland State will close out regular season play next weekend, hosting Milwaukee on Friday and Saturday.
