The Dominant Dozen: Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Stretches Win Streak to 12 With Victory Over Green Bay

Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State men's basketball team used another dominant second half performance in winning its 12th consecutive game with an 81-66 victory over Green Bay at the Wolstein Center Saturday afternoon. The Vikings improve to 10-1 in the Horizon League and 16-6 overall. Green Bay falls to 2-20 and remains winless in conference play at 0-11.

The 12-game win streak is tied for the second-longest in the nation, only behind Duke who defeated Wake Forest tonight to stretch its streak to 13 games. Cleveland State's streak began with an 83-61 win against the Phoenix on December 7 on the road and the Vikings have not lost since that point.

The Vikings won despite shooting just 53 percent from the free throw line and being outscored in the paint 30-26. Cleveland State dominated the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Green Bay 42-28. 59 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc in the second half allowed the Vikings to pull away late, outscoring Green Bay 47-33 in the second half.

Cleveland State's balanced offensive attack was on full display yet again as five players finished in double figures. Chase Robinson led the way with 17 points, with 15 coming in the second half. Robinson was 5-for-8 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free throw line.

Tevin Smith chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds while also leading the team with five assists. Smith finished 6-for-11 from the field and added three free throws to his scoring total.

Reece Robinson and Ebrima Dibba finished with 14 points each. Robinson recorded his third collegiate double-double and his second in the last four games as he added 11 rebounds. Robinson finished 4-for-7 from the field including making two of his three attempts from long range. Ebrima Dibba also had a strong day from outside, finishing 3-for-4 from three-point land. Dibba added two rebounds and three assists.

Tahj Staveskie was the final player to crack double digits finishing with 10 points. Staveskie played just 23 minutes after picking up two quick fouls early in the second half which brought him to four total for the game. He finished 4-for-9 from the field including two three-pointers.

Cleveland State led for the majority of the game, racking up over 34 minutes of time with the lead. The game was played in single digits most of the way, with six lead changes and six ties. Cleveland State's depth slowly wore down Green Bay and the Vikings pulled away late to secure the 15-point win.

Back-to-back threes from Dibba and Staveskie gave the host Vikings a good start and were part of an early 8-2 run to put Cleveland State up six.

Green Bay trimmed the gap to one and eventually took its first lead at the 9:18 mark of the first half. The Phoenix were up four before two quick buckets from Smith and Dylan Arnett tied the score at 17 with 7:23 remaining.

The two buckets kick-started a 12-0 Cleveland State run that put the Vikings in front by eight with 5:24 to play in the opening half. Dibba punctuated the run with another three-pointer that made it 25-17 Vikings.

Green Bay hung around and responded with a late 9-0 run in just under two minutes of game action that quickly put the Phoenix back in front 33-31 with less than a minute to play before halftime. Smith responded with a three-point play with three seconds left to give the Vikings a one-point lead at the break, 34-33.

Cleveland State led for almost the entirety of the second half but the Phoenix did not go away. The game stayed within two possessions for the first 16 minutes of the half as each time the Vikings attempted to put some distance between the two teams, Green Bay responded with points of its own to keep the game tight.

Cleveland State finally pulled away thanks to a timely three-pointer from Reece Robinson followed by a Chase Robinson layup which gave the Vikings a seven-point advantage with 3:50 to play. Shortly thereafter a Je'Shawn Stevenson three-pointer gave the Vikings a double-digit lead for the first time at 74-64 and forced a Green Bay timeout with 2:02 remaining.

The Vikings kept the lead in double figures the rest of the way. Smith's free throw with 27 seconds to play made the final margin Cleveland State's largest lead of the day as the clock wound down to zero.

Cleveland State returns to action on Thursday, January 30 as the Vikings travel to Purdue Fort Wayne for a nationally televised game against Purdue Fort Wayne. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and is set for a 9:00 p.m. tip-off from Fort Wayne.
